c. 1890–1920
This exceptional antique folding game table is an example of Anglo-Indian export furniture produced in India during the late 19th to early 20th century, a period when highly skilled local craftsmen created finely carved pieces for British colonial households and international export.
The circular tabletop is richly decorated with deep, hand-pierced floral and foliate carving, accented by a repeating elephant motif around the border. Elephants are a traditional symbol of strength, protection, and prosperity in Indian decorative arts, and their inclusion reflects both cultural symbolism and the export market’s fascination with “Oriental” design during the colonial era.
At the center of the top is an inlaid checker-style game board, set with antique decorative inlay (ivory or bone) consistent with period construction. Such inlay was commonly used in high-quality Anglo-Indian furniture of this era and was intended for games such as draughts or chess, making the table both functional and ornamental.
The table features a folding pedestal base, constructed with hinged vertical panels that allow the piece to collapse flat when not in use. This practical design was especially valued in colonial homes for portability and efficient storage. The form is characteristic of export furniture made for British officers’ quarters and well-appointed households.
The piece is likely crafted from teak or Indian rosewood (sheesham), both dense, durable hardwoods favored for their strength, resistance to warping, and suitability for intricate carving. The surface displays a warm, aged patina with honest wear consistent with antique use, enhancing its character and authenticity.
The table is structurally sound, with intact hinges, stable construction, and well-preserved carving and inlay. Minor surface wear and age marks are present, as expected in a genuine antique of this age.
